DAY 17 (Aug 8): Modena to Florence, 996, 93, 6456 ft, 69 ft/mi DAY 18 (Aug 9): rest day in Florence
  • moderately large hill, total climbing is probably misleading - looks like lots of dips on the whole ride
  • total climb is 2542 ft elevation gain, with 3899 ft climbed over 33.2 miles; 1.5% and 2.2% average grades
  • climb gets steeper after 21 miles: 740 ft/21 miles = .7% avg; 1802 ft/12.2 miles = 2.8% avg; adjusting for total elevation gains: 1% and 4.1 %.
  • long ride before a rest day
  • LOTS to see in Florence:
    • Brunelleschi’s Dome (Il Duomo); buy a ticket to climb 463 steps to the top
    • Piazza della Signoria and Palazzo Vechhio (heart of historic center)
    • Uffizi - largest Renaissance art museum in the world; need to pre-purchase tickets (closed Mondays)
    • Baptistery; the original doors are in the Duomo Museum
